Happy 2010! With the festive franticness slowly easing I’ve finally found the time to sit down and start to do all those things I’ve been meaning to do for ages! Hence a catch up with your website blog which, in turn created some smiles at reading a “bit of a wheeze” … and having lived in Over Peover for many years trying to suss out who the real Ken Grundy may be. However even more of a pleasant surprise was seeing my dads’ dog sat eagerly waiting for his next opportunity to round up some sheep! If there is any chance that I could have a copy of the photos that you took of Tom The Shepherd and His Dog it would be very much appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon : )

Deb, thanks for your comments. I will happily send you the pictures of the indomitable Cappy the sheepdog. He was the hero of the day and ever so patient. Not to mention his matinee idol looks. I have never seen a sheepdog round up sheep in such a calm and measured fashion – the sheep looked positively relaxed. I had a border collie visit my neighbour for Christmas while I was in France – my field adjoins their house. I made use of the dog in rounding up my few sheep and goats but they clearly did not like the experience. No doubt Cappy would have done a better job.

  3. Thanks George for your kind comments on my book ‘Towton: The Bloodiest Battle’. Where did you get the portrait of John Clifford from? To be honest I imagined him rather different. I don’t hold with the idea that he was a merciless ‘butcher’, but I think he looks quite harmless and not what I expected. My personal opinion is that he was cruelly misunderstood and misrepresented by history. Working from the limited evidence we have of his career I reckon he was a noble on the edge, drawing on the most basic instinct and cause for violence known to man – revenge. He certainly got a bad press from the Yorkists and chroniclers thereafter. Fantastic Website by the way! I will be buying your book soon and giving it a review.

Andrew, good to hear from you and thanks for your kind words. The portrait of John Clifford is in a private collection. I got permission to use it via Sebastian Fattorini of Skipton Castle who knows the owner of the portrait. It is a 16th Century depiction of John Clifford, hence the ruff. I agree with you about the Cliffords. All they were really doing was supporting their anointed king. Shakespeare did not do John Clifford any favours, or Richard III for that matter. He just needed a bad guy for the Lancastrians and a bad guy for the Yorkists – in the fashion of all great storytellers! I try to redress that in my little novel as my Bolling family ancestors have cause to be in debt to both characters.
